Aikido is a Japanese martial art, related to Jiu Jitsu and Judo. Aikido is different from other martial arts in that the practitioner seeks to achieve self-defense without injuring attackers. The aikidoka harmonizes with, rather than confronts a linear attack and converts it into a circular motion that unbalances the attacker. Then, instead of using potentially crippling kicks or punches, the aikidoka trains to apply various wrist locks, arm pins or throws to neutralize aggressors without causing serious injury.
The word Aikido is composed of three Japanese characters, Ai 合, which means harmony, Ki 氣, which means spirit of energy, and Do 道, the path, the system or the way. Aikido, 合氣道, is the way of spirit of harmony.
Aikido offers practical self-defense, but more importantly, it teaches self-improvement. Aikido is more than the study of physical techniques; proper etiquette, attitude, and behavior are also emphasized. Throwing and falling are stressed equally since your partner is not an opponent, but an assistant. You acquire the technique by being thrown and practice the technique by throwing. Aikido improves not only physical conditioning, but mental conditioning as well.
Aikido is for people of all ages. Our club however requires a minimum age of 15 years.
It is often difficult for children to learn the more complex movements used in Aikido. Especially the young children often get frustrated with the required repetition of movements. Therefore, children are ideally taught in a different manner than adults. Unfortunately, our club does not currently have the capacity to hold separate classes for children.
